Note from Pete: I come from a family of engineers, musicians, and bookworms.  You might say I’m an unlikely athlete. I dabbled in a few sports growing up, but didn’t really start to discover my physicality until my late 20s. After a couple wake-up calls (like almost failing an Air Force fitness test… go ahead and laugh now), I realized it was time to start paying attention to my health and fitness for the first time in my life.


Then I immediately blew my ACL. In rehab after surgery, one of the physical therapists told me I probably wouldn’t be able to run again, which I took as both an insult and a challenge. A couple years later, I ran my first half marathon and never looked back.


The great thing about waiting to discover yourself as an athlete in your 30s is that everything is new and interesting. I’ve been lucky to refashion myself as a runner, a cyclist, a weightlifter, and a CrossFitter over the past decade, and achieve things I could never have dreamed of when I was an overweight, pack-a-day aircraft mechanic.


Along the way, I became ravenous for the knowledge of how all this fitness stuff worked, so I could do it for myself. I learned to problem-solve the challenges of a fit and healthy lifestyle as an adult, which feeds directly into my style and ability as a coach. Mainly, I’ve learned that everybody is a born athlete; some of us just figure it out later. And that can be a beautiful thing.
